Heron Gallery

The Blue Heron – the flying dinosaurs of yesterday and today, with an elegance and grace that is astounding to see. Their nest building in places called rookeries is one of the most beautiful dances I have ever witnessed.  They fly through the air with twigs and branches longer than they are and present them to their mates in stands of dead trees filled with dozens of giant nests.  They seem to suspend themselves in mid-air just before landing, with a flight capability we can only dream of duplicating.   I had no idea such an amazing place existed.  Goofy at rest or fishing but magical in flight, I have to wonder why I started inventing alien landscapes with heron like creatures in them decades before I started photographing herons.
